AT&T Buys T-Mobile USA In 39 Billion Dollar

The $39bn (£24bn) deal will see AT&T leapfrog Verizon, America's biggest mobile operator which is 45%-owned by Vodafone. The enlarged group will serve more than 108 million US customers, compared with Verizon's 87 million.

Deutsche Telekom, the German owner of T-Mobile, will collect at least $25bn in cash and receive an equity stake of up to 8%  in AT&T. The deal values T-Mobile USA at seven times adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (ebitda).

The deal brings to an end more than 18 months of speculation about the future of T-Mobile USA.
